Vanadiumpentoxid ist ein häufig verwendeter Katalysator in verschiedenen chemischen Reaktionen. Es wird insbesondere bei der Herstellung von Schwefelsäure eingesetzt, wo es als Katalysator bei der Oxidation von Schwefeldioxid zu Schwefeltrioxid wirkt. Es wird auch bei der Herstellung von Maleinsäureanhydrid, Phthalsäureanhydrid und anderen Chemikalien verwendet.
Vanadiumpentoxid wird in bestimmten Arten von Energiespeichersystemen verwendet, beispielsweise in Vanadium-Redox-Flow-Batterien (VRFBs). Diese Batterien verwenden einen Elektrolyten auf Vanadiumbasis, bei dem Vanadiumionen in unterschiedlichen Oxidationsstufen zwischen zwei Elektrolyttanks hin- und herpendeln und so eine reversible und langlebige Energiespeicherlösung bieten.
